Penalties    A $25 per month late fee is assessed to Active and Inactive status lawyers that register late. This monthly late fee continues to accrue until the registration is successfully completed. The late fee can therefore accrue and accumulate indefinitely.

Active    Only active lawyers are authorized to practice law based upon their Illinois license or hold themselves out as being so authorized. Active lawyers must pay an annual fee according to the following schedule:

Admitted to the bar in any jurisdiction before January 1, 2015
(Active Fee Detail)
$385.00

  Admitted between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2016 $121.00

Admitted between January 1, 2017 and the present No Fee

Serving active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States No Fee

Serving as a justice, judge, associate judge or magistrate of a court of the United States or of the State of Illinois (does not apply to administrative law judges) No Fee

Serving as a law clerk, secretary, or administrative assistant to a justice, judge, associate judge or magistrate who is exempt from the fee No Fee

Penalty per month on late registrations $25.00

(To change your status online, please see below.)

Inactive    Lawyers who register as inactive must pay an annual fee of $121.00. Inactive status lawyers may not practice law based upon their Illinois license or hold themselves out as being so authorized. An inactive lawyer may resume active status by submitting written or online notification of the intent to do so, and by paying the balance of the fee active lawyers must pay for the registration year in which active status is resumed. Inactive lawyers are also subject to a $25.00 per month late fee if registering late. (To change your status online, please see below.)

Retired    Retired lawyers pay no registration fee, and may not practice law based upon their Illinois license or hold themselves out as being so authorized. A retired lawyer may resume active status by submitting written or online notification of the intent to do so, and by paying full active fees for the registration year in question and for every other year in which the lawyer was registered as retired. (To change your status online, please see below.)
